You're saying you have a 10.4.9 box that has picked up the 10.5.1  
update and is serving it to 10.5 clients?

I'm pretty sure Apple have failed to do the minimal amount of work  
that would be needed to make a 10.4.x server capable of serving out  
the new flat file packages in 10.5, so this is rather surprising  
news....
