Hi all;

(for anyone who has ever grabbed a disc out of storage only to see the
layers {and the associated data} disappearing)...

here's some information you may consider passing on to your fellow
IT professionals, or your Library / Records & Archives section.

Verbatim have recently released an archival grade CD & DVD stock with
azo dyes,
and dual protective layers - I won't bother you with the spin; read
it for yourself
http://www.verbatim.com/optical/archival/

As one who has had early silver technology CD discs suffer edge
corrosion and
complete loss of data, finding a good archival quality disc has been
very important
for storage of documents. data, audio, video etc...
And I'm presuming also of interest to quite a few archivists round
Australia.

When I found these disks, I was dismayed to hear that Verbatim were
only bringing
in the Archival grade DVD discs, not the CD discs. Even though CD's
hold less,
certainly with audio they are a fairly universal standard, so even in
the most
basic of libraries one would expect that a CD should "play".

After hassling a few of the verbatim suppliers, it seems that
Verbatim have reneged
and agreed to bring in a small trial shipment of the 96159 CD-R
archival discs
(it will most probably have a different product code number in Aus)

Soooooo, if I'm not the only person who can see the value in these
archival CD-R
discs, enough interest has to be sustained so that they continue to
be imported.

My simple request is to pass on this information to people
(IT / Archives & Records / Libraries ) who may benefit from what
appears to be an
optical disc with archival storage capability.

Disclaimer - i have absolutely no "interest" in verbatim or this
product whatsoever

cheers
