[UniMacTech] Disable iMac internal speakers?

Hi folks,

Is there a way to disable an Intel iMacs / Mac Mini's internal speakers,
such that all audio output goes through the headphone jack? Given most
of our Macs are in a classroom environment it would be nice if the
internal speakers were turned off at all times, such that if students
did want to hear audio output they would have to plug in headphones first.

From what I've discovered via google, the only way seems to be plugging
in some kind of "jack" into the headphone output that fools the Mac into
thinking headphones are connected, thus it disables the speakers
straight away. Whilst this a cheap and nasty fix, it's not particularly
foolproof.

Any better ideas?

Cheers
Mark
