Summary: your problem is not software, it is hardware.

The solution is to either flash your drive's firmware (if possible),  
possibly voiding the warranty on it, or buy an external DVD drive that  
you can move between computers and use VLC to play DVDs

We opted to buy a number of Firewire/USB2 5.25 cases and put Pioneer  
DVR-111BK drives in them. It has worked well for us.
