[UniMacTech] iPhone on campus

I am on vodafone and have similar experience.
It seems iTunes on the iPhone will only work through wifi (to protect you from spending too much on your data plan I suppose) which is silly given people may have 1G or 2G data plans
So even if I am web browsing through 3G/HSDPA and have a 500MB download limit it wont let me buy a song through the store that would occupy less than 10MB yet I can buy an application through the app store that is bigger than 10MB
Any others has similar experiences?

Hi Stephen, hope things are well with you?
I can confirm that iPhone works just fine at JCU - I have one and it's happily using our wi-fi connection when in range, and switching to Optus 3G when not - no problems here, and easy to setup too. I haven't even cracked my phone yet ;-)
However iTunes store doesn't appear to want to connect, and VPN is no go, but I think our server is currently down, so I've not had a good crack at it yet - it looks like it should work ok.
Unfortunately I'm not responsible for documentation but there you go. Carl van Wyck has a testing iPhone he's offering to loan people, so testing is definitely underway.

Folks,
I've been looking at Uni support for iPhone/iPod Touch as a colleague and I are meeting with IT Directors (CAUDIT AGM) next month and we will be discussing iPhone amongst other things.
Although some sites <http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1012405.html> have interesting discussions, I think it would be useful to create a more definitive listing.
By no means is below an indication that iPhone/iPod Touch is or isn't supported, but it does indicate "official support" levels.
May I ask you to send me any edits if appropriate (ie if you know of support docos at your uni that I've missed) ?
Cheers,
Stephen
