[UniMacTech] What rights do your laptop users have?

Hi Mervyn,
We use it firmware passwords to restrict boot options on student lab
machines. Of course, having physical access to the machines means that it's
possible to do a firmware reset, but it's the process is fiddly enough to
deter all but the most determinedly destructive users.

If you're looking at adding firmware passwords to already deployed machines,
it can be done from the command line with the nvram utility (
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/nvra
m.8.html), or you might find it easier to use the OFPW tool, which scripts
the process
(http://archive.macenterprise.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=
137&Itemid=132).

Cheers,

Ben Hartridge
